Skating Transport Roster

This was a table when I cut and pasted it.  I hope it still makes sense as it all merged together!  We look covered for this week but a bit light next week.  Thank you so much for your help.

I will wait at school on Tuesday for those who bus to school, who have let me know that they need transport.  Please line up outside the rink. The roll will be taken before we go in.

Skating Update - Tuesday 2nd

Slight change to timetable for us.

Owing to Room 3 swimming and not wanting to skate with wet hair, Rooms 3 & 4 will now skate from 9 - 10am. Room 4 students can be dropped at the rink, but must line up outside where I will take a roll before we head into the rink about 8:50am to get skates etc.

I will be at school till 8:45am and will bring anyone travelling on the buses to the rink.  Please let me know if your child will need a ride to the rink at this time, so that I know to wait for them.
We will need transport back to school about 10:10am please. If you had offered transport for the 11 - 12 skating slot could you please confirm if you are still available at 10:10am, Deb O'Neill has offered to bring a van load back.  Once I have this confirmed I will put the transport roster on the blog, rather than send home a hard copy.

Skating

The winter sports skating programme starts next week

The cost for skating this year is:
  • Entry & Skate hire $6  ($3 entry, $3 equipment hire skates and/or stones)
  • Activity $2
Total cost for Rooms 3 & 4 – 4 sessions $32.

Those with yellow rink concessions need to have their ticket sighted by the class teacher and the teacher then records the names on the daily payment sheet. Thanks for your co-operation with this requirement.

Tuesday 2 July:
  • 11-12 Rm 3 & 4 Skating

Wednesday 3 July:

  • 10 -11 Rm 3 & 4 Skating

Wednesday10 July:

  • 10 -11 Rm 3 & 4 Skating

Thursday 11 July:

  • 10 -11 Rm 3 & 4 Skating
Thank you to Kathy Kelliher, Ellen Middendorf, Dale Hutton, Angela Sidon and Debbie Bruhns who have offered to transport us to and from the rink.  We have 22 seats available at this stage to take 31 of us to the rink.  If anyone else is able to assist I would be very grateful.  Please be in the church carpark at 10:40am (Tuesday 2nd) and 9:40am the other three days.

Please remember that jackets, gloves and hats are essential and SKIRTS are not to be worn.

Rooms 1 to 3 must wear helmets when attending lessons and the rink and myself would encourage everyone to wear these as a precaution.  Positive peer pressure for this please, Room 4.

Please attend to the payment for this activity before the end of the term if possible, as it means that Mrs Bennie can clear this term's monies before the start of next term.

Looking forward to this great winter activity.

Warehouse BBQ Fundraiser 20th July

Angela needs 2 families for the BBQ on July 20th.  Families need to meet at 10:45 at The Warehouse and work until about 2pm.  The profit for this time is about $70 for each family.  If you have already raised enough funds for your child please do not take up this opportunity.

There may be other dates available in the future.  If you can help out or are interested please phone Angela on 021 217 8049 or 4485120

Newsletter/Homework 24th June

Hard to believe that we are in the 8th week of the term. We have some fantastic board games created, and have been learning about giving and using constructive criticism as we improve the clarity of the instructions written. Tomorrow we will be writing a narrative sample.

It was good to see so many attend mass yesterday and participate by being altar servers, readers, choir and singing. A very scrumptious morning tea afterwards was enjoyed despite the chilly breeze direct from the Antarctic by the feel.

Wednesday afternoon sees us join with the Keeping Alexandra Beautiful Group at 1:30 participating in mulching the plants in the area beside the Rail Trail that St Gerards School looks after.  Please wear school tracksuits with plenty of warm uniform clothing underneath.  Gumboots, shovels, buckets, gloves so that we can all get stuck in to get the job done. There will be adults from the KAB Group, but parents are welcome to join with us in this venture.

Thursday 2:10 Assembly: this week is our turn to present at assembly.  There is a wide range of learning that the class has chosen to share - we are now fine tuning our presentations.

Poetry Eisteddfods: will be heard next Monday morning, with the Eisteddfod assembly on Thursday 4th. Everyone needed to have their poems in their homework books by last Friday - those who did not meet this deadline will need to work hard now, as they have lost 1 of the 5 marks for preparation. A wide variety of poems have been chosen - will be very entertaining.

Religious Education: a worksheet related to our work on the images of God is in the homework books. Please reflect on the 'qualities' that these images tell us about.  Father Pat visits our class tomorrow.

Alexandra Library: we will visit on Friday 5th July.  I need a couple of parents to walk to and from with us please.  A good time to get some reading ready for the holidays.

Morning Programme: Group 3 this week, Simone (Our Country) is leader, Brieanna - music, Levi - How to..., Emma - introducer/current events, Joe - poem, Reuben - book review.  What an interesting idea for "How to" last week Will - changing a bike tyre.  A very practical demonstration.  Well done.

Reading Logs: remember to read a variety of texts and record this in your logs.

Maths: no worksheet this week, but the monthly tables test is next Friday.  Use your past sheets to practise recalling the facts quickly. Maths Buddy or Study Ladder also have some practice pages.

Friday 21st

A change in programme for Friday.  We will not be going to the Alexandra Library - this visit has been postponed till Friday 5th July to suit the Rooms 3 & 6 visit.

On Friday afternoon we, along with some Enviro Group students and some Discovery Time juniors will be spreading mulch on the gardens near the Rail Trail on Station St.  This is our school's area to look after. Wear your school tracksuit with warm layers underneath, bring a jacket, some gardening gloves and a tool to work with if you can.  Gum boots would also be the best idea, as it is very wet under foot.  Obviously this activity will be weather dependent.

School Mass Sunday 23rd

A reminder that this Sunday is school mass to celebrate the Feast of John the Baptist. It is expected that as many of you are there as possible, as this is the school mass for the term. The choir will lead the singing and there is opportunity for participation in other parts of the mass. Please let me know if you will not be there.

Week 7 Newsletter

Wow! Congratulations to the Rippa Rugby team of Celia, Keila, Anna, Kate, Brieanna, Will, Joshua, Padraig, Reuben and Joe in placing 4th at the Regional Finals in Cromwell last week.  This is an awesome result as the teams placing higher all came from much bigger schools - Arrowtown, The Terrace and Remarkables.  A HUGE THANK YOU to Vaughn Healey who has come to school to take practices with the team, to Charlie O'Neill who helped so much at each tournament and of course to all the parents who have been so supportive with transport and encouragement.

Skating: this is coming up in weeks 9 and 10 of the term.  The timetable for this was attached to last week's newsletter. We need transport to and from the ice each day please. This year the junior school will travel by bus, to alleviate the concerns about car seats.  One thing missing from this information sheet was that as a school we require all children in Rooms 1, 2 & 3 to wear helmets and we recommend helmets for Room 4 and 6 for safety.  All students need jackets and hats which may be taken off if too hot, but gloves need to be worn at all times on the ice. To help Mrs Bennie with all the $'s that she needs to sort at the end of the term it would be appreciated if skating money was paid to the office before the last week of term.  If there is an issue with this please contact Mrs Eastwood or myself and alternative arrangements can be made.

Eisteddfods: Some people have already begun preparing for this and have their poems in their homework books - well done to you.  Everyone needs to have a copy of their poem by Friday 21st. Check "Poetry Eisteddfod" Blog entry for marking schedule. The poems chosen are super and I'm expecting a wonderful morning's entertainment on Monday 1st July.

Spelling Alive: The week before last, the class was retested for levels on Spelling Alive - there was a great improvement in skills across the board with some people moving 2 levels.  Well done.  I was excited. I will start everyone on their new levels in the next couple of weeks, as I still want to complete the teaching of  "1 sound = several spelling patterns" across all levels, and catch up with testing those who were absent. In saying this, I am still needing to write quite a few hints in some people's homework books about conducting, tooling and being responsible for checking each night's spelling against the typed words.  I have been told that if a mistake is learned, it takes 28 times of relearning to reprogramme this in our brains, so if a conscientious learner writes it incorrectly each night, that is 4 x 28 = 112 times of relearning to correct it.  Habit of Mind to focus on in Spelling is Accuracy and Precision (make it right). "Do it once. do it right!" This means taking responsibility for checking on our learning.

Maths: At the moment we are working on multiplication and division, with classes cross grouped from Room 3 - 6. We are all picking up new strategies easily, however for some people the lack of knowing tables instantly is now impacting on how they can use these strategies to solve problems. Homework sheets have been tables based, as we all need to smarten up our knowledge. Students can also bring home games to play to help with this knowledge or get into the speed pages on Maths Buddy.

Reading: At present I am Probe testing in readiness for report writing.  I share the results as I go, so ask your child how they went and what they need to work on.  It would be great to see everyone recording their reading in their reading logs.

Morning Programme: Group 2 this week.  Zoe (Our Country) is group leader, Hannah - music, Will - how to, Adriana - introducer/current events, Kahn - poem, Zeph - book review. Morning Programmes have been super - some fantastic ideas that perhaps we could use to make things to sell for the fair in November, wheat bags (Brooke) and photo frames (Eilish).  Thank you girls.

Gmail:
This has now been set up for all of year 6, which means that work can be emailed home to work on, or once I have this sussed, can be worked on, on a google doc where work can be shared and worked on collaboratively. Room 4 saw how this works today as we worked on a document about how students saw "participating and contributing" in action in the school.  This document was set up on a staff shared document and we discovered that Room 6 were also brain storming the idea at the same time.
