Term 3 Week 1

Welcome back to a very busy term.

Homework this week:
Reading
Cross Country Training Logs
Runners & school sports uniform to change into each day as we train for the event
Monthly tables test Friday - practice sheet in the homework tray
Spelling
Those who have Maths Buddy have some geometry activities to support our class learning.

Eisteddfod this term is a speech, which will be heard on Monday 23rd September

In weeks 5 - 9 we will have a swimming programme.  Lessons will be Tuesdays & Fridays.  Once I have times for these I will look at the Morning Programme timetable, so no Morning Programme for this week.

Hoping for a snow fall - Coronet Peak looked fairly thin as I flew over yesterday.

Week 10

A big thank you to everyone who has helped us over the term.  The ice has been absolutely amazing, so it was worth the wait.  Thanks for those people who have transported us to and from.  I can see that everyone has refined their skills - maybe 3 days in a row is the way to go.

PTA Lunches:
Next term the PTA will be doing lunches on a Wednesday - not just a BBQ.  They will have the menu on the PTA page of the school website at the beginning of the week and orders need to be in by Tuesday.  Check the school newsletter for the exact details.  Sounds exciting.

Thank you so much to the parents who have manned the BBQ on Thursdays for the last 2 terms.  Your cooking was popular.

Book Week:
Week 2 of the term - a book fair in the library. The theme for this week is "Reading For Work".  It would be great to have parents who have a range of jobs come and share the types of texts that they use in their work places - builder's plans, town plans, electrical wiring, handbooks for a variety of things.

Thursday:
Morning Programme Group 5:
Everyone has been reminded.  We will do these presentations first thing in the morning.

Thursday Cultural Assembly:
Room 6 will lead this assembly starting in the hall a 1:30.  What a great programme is planned.  Thank you to so many Room 4 students being willing to share their talents with the school community.

Town Library Challenge:
Remember to register at the library - looks like a Geronimo Stilton theme - a favourite character in our class.

Wishing everyone a relaxing holiday and safe travels if you are heading away.  Time to get rid of these winter ills and read a book or two.

Week 9 Newsletter & Homework

Well, I'm amazed to see that the skating roster is in table form when I opened this on my home computer tonight, it certainly wasn't when I checked at school after posting it on Saturday.

What an entertaining morning of Eisteddfod poems performed to a high standard.  Congratulations everyone, especially Molly, Michael and Eilish who took part in this for the first time.  It was also fantastic to have some people perform their own poems (Molly, Joe and Eilish) - well done.  I will add the names of those presenting their poems at Thursday's Eisteddfod assembly after I have read the class suggestions.  Those presenting will know tomorrow - a hard job to choose from so many excellent performances.

Mulch Moving: A great job was done by everyone last Wednesday afternoon and was recognised by the Keep Alexandra Beautiful Group with a box of sweets for each helper.  There is still a huge pile of mulch to be shifted around the garden areas which I am told we are welcome to work on in the future.

Board Games: Friday saw us sharing our board games with our buddies in Rooms 1 & 2 - what a lot of fun everyone had. We also shared these and an i-movie about how we felt about our designs at our assembly last Thursday afternoon.

Skating: tomorrow meet at the rink, (I will transport those arriving at school by bus), Wednesday we'll leave school at 9:40am.  Remember gloves, jackets, warm gear and hats/helmets are advisable. No school uniform - warm mufti. A good idea to bring something to drink as all the exercise makes you very thirsty.

Mrs Eastwood is teaching in Room 4 Monday - Wednesday afternoons this week to allow me some extra time to work on reports, and Mrs Donaldson will be teaching Thursday morning as I  will be in Dunedin for the day.

Spelling: make sure that you are checking your spelling each night against the typed words and practise conducting and tooling each night. It was interesting to watch the class as they did a writing sample last week, to see several people using these skills on the run in their writing, and others using a spare page to ''sample" spelling patterns in words.  Good to see new learning being used effectively.

Maths: Monthly tables test this Friday - set your goal and work on any facts that are still tricky. Good to see Maths Buddy people practising tables on the speedy facts and working on multiplication and division.  Next week we will do a short unit on 'Time',  I have put some activities to be completed on Maths Buddy.

Science: We have had a few experiments to date, some have been succesful, others not quite so. Our timetable has had a few changes due to extra activities, but we will get through everyone's, some may well have to be next term now.  Be sure to have your science skills identified, your questions ready and have done some research into the science behind your experiment.  We are working at being scientists, so we need to be using scientific vocabulary which we may need to explain to others, so that we all understand.

Reading: Visit to Alexandra Library - Friday 9am: I do need a couple of people to walk to the library with us.  Lisa Reilly is unavailable this week, so at this stage I don't have any offers. Remember to keep reading a variety of books and share your favourites with others.

Morning Programme: Group 4: Maisie (Our Country) is the leader to remind everyone, Anna - Music, Zachary - How to.., Alannah - Introducer/Current Events, Tyron - Poem, Padraig - Book Review.

Ski Trip: Today I heard back from Coronet Peak regarding the costs for parents to ski over and above their standard ratio offer of 1 Free of Charge per 10 students and 1 @ student rate per 10 students.  They have been very generous so I once I complete reports I will be in touch with those parents who have offered to attend the camp.  Parents will have their accommodation and food costs paid for with the ski cost  being divided equally amongst those attending.  This was the choice made by you all earlier in the year.

No homework next week, so let's have all books in on Friday with everything done.
